this was the first crumb story to really grab me. i think i actually read it when it was fairly recently done (age alert!). until then i wasn't hip to the hub bub, bub. having a few mind altering experiences beforehand certainly helped to grease the wheels.
there's a bbc documentary, which crumb wrote, and it shows him working on this piece. it's a pretty interesting dvd for obsessives and fans alike.
