I don't know about recognizing photos, but our Fidel sits with us watching television. And not just the doggie programmes either. He likes listening to a string quartet on the arts channel. (Last night it was Beethoven.)
If they can successfully identify a particular toy from a photo of that toy, then they understand that the photo is a symbolic representation of the toy. Doesn't that mean they are using symbolic thought? Are they able to manipulate symbols (as in maths)?
I propose the following experiment:
Attach labels to some toys, with each toy assigned a simple geometric figure (square, triangle, circle, etc), and spread the toys around a room. In another room with the dog, hold up a card with one of the figures on it and say 'Fetch'.
If this worked, you'd then add numbers.
Hmm, maybe this should be my studio project for next semester...

Bollocks. Maybe they just see in 2D like cats.
I also thought about trying drawings of the toys, and then abstracting them.
